Non-target university
Fit & BehaviouralA university where a firm runs no formal recruiting presence, which changes how a candidate gets access rather than the standard they are held to.
Also written: non-target, non target university, target school
A target university is one where a firm runs a formal recruiting presence: a campus presentation, a CV drop, a society it sponsors, an alumnus who comes back each autumn. A non-target is one where it does not. The list exists because recruiter time is finite and a firm can only cover a small number of universities properly, and it is usually built from where past hires came from rather than from any current ranking.
The distinction is about access, not standard. Nobody at a target university is asked easier technical questions. What they get is a shorter path to being seen: a presentation to attend, a name to email, an insight programme that leads into an accelerated process the following autumn. A candidate without that has to generate the same access themselves.
That is a real cost and a solvable one. The routes that work are direct outreach to a named person with a specific reason for the approach, an off-cycle internship at a smaller firm that becomes the credential, and in continental Europe a masters at a university the firm does cover. The common thread is that each one produces evidence rather than an argument.
It binds hardest in London, where one office draws applicants from every country in Europe and a firm can fill a class from a short list of universities without ever looking further. It binds least where an office recruits mainly from the universities near it, which is much of the continent, and that is one of the better reasons to look seriously at markets outside London.
In the interview itself the trap is raising it first and apologising for it. If you have been invited in, the screen has already been passed, and the only thing left to establish is that you can do the work. Attacking the concept is worse: it is a resourcing decision rather than an insult, and arguing about it consumes the time you had to give the technical answer that would have closed it.
Worked example
Two candidates with the same grades apply to the same London programme. One attended an insight programme in first year, met two people on the desk, and is invited into an accelerated process.
The other has never met the firm. The interview standard is identical, but the first arrives with a relationship and a reason to be remembered, and the second has to build both from an email.
That is the whole of what target status buys, which is why the counter is evidence rather than explanation.
