How internships work here

Very short placements

One Zagreb firm advertises a three week student internship. That is the shortest we found anywhere in Europe, against six weeks in Norway and six months in France, and it makes an internship here feasible inside a normal university holiday.

Apply by email, with documents

The dominant route. One Bucharest employer asks for a CV, a cover letter and academic transcripts sent to a named individual with a specified subject line. Follow the format exactly; where a small firm names a subject line, it is because that is how the applications get sorted.

Transaction advisory framing

One Belgrade role is titled strategy and transactions rather than investment banking. In smaller markets the deal work sits inside advisory practices more often than inside banks.

Where the roles are

• Belgrade, Zagreb and Bucharest are where we verify live routes. Athens is currently the weak spot: the three internship pages we checked at one Greek house all render but list only full time roles, with no internship content on any of them.
• This is a small market and our coverage of it is small. We would rather publish three verified routes and say so than imply more.
• The employers here are domestic advisory and capital markets houses, plus the transaction advisory arms of the large accounting firms. The international banks do not appear.

When to apply

• No employer we verified in this region publishes an application window. Every live route is rolling.
• That makes this region unusual: there is nothing to miss and nothing to plan around. The constraint is that you have to find the firms, because they do not advertise on the boards students already watch.

Language requirements

• English is the stated requirement where one is stated at all. One Belgrade employer asks for good spoken and written English and nothing else.
• No employer we verified in this region asks for the local language on the posting. That is a meaningful difference from Italy, the Nordics and German speaking Europe, and it makes these markets more open to an outside applicant than their size suggests.

What a local applicant knows

• Check the email address rather than the text around it. One employer in this region displays one domain in the page text while the underlying link resolves to a different one, and another applies through a parent banking group's domain rather than its own. Sending to the address you read rather than the address behind the link may reach nobody.
• A page titled for an internship does not always contain one. Three pages we checked at one Athens firm carry internship titles and share a single widget listing only full time roles. Read what is on the page, not what it is called.
• Because everything here is rolling and email based, a speculative approach is normal rather than presumptuous. In London the same approach would count against you.

• Everything above was observed on official postings on 7 August 2026. Nothing is inferred from general knowledge about this market, so where an employer stated nothing, this page says nothing.
• The employer's own page is the source of truth. Roles are filled, withdrawn and re-dated without notice.
• Coverage reflects firms whose recruiting is publicly documented, which under-represents smaller boutiques that hire through networks.
