Prácticas semestrales, the semester block

One Madrid adviser advertises prácticas semestrales for January to June 2027, a six month block aligned to the academic semester rather than to a summer. This is the shape to expect in Spain, and it means a January start is as normal as a June one.

Off cycle at the international banks

The international banks run their Iberian seats as off cycle placements alongside their other European offices rather than as a separate Spanish programme.

Trainee framing in Portugal

The Lisbon route we verified is advertised as a trainee position in M&A advisory rather than as an internship. The word differs; the entry point does not.

Where the roles are

• Madrid is the market in practice. One Spanish adviser lists offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Sevilla and Milan, and every one of its live vacancies when we checked was Madrid. Do not infer a Barcelona seat from a Barcelona office.
• Lisbon appears through the international banks rather than through domestic houses, at least in what we verify.
• The Spanish market includes advisers whose careers pages are written entirely in Spanish while the roles themselves state no language requirement, which makes the market look less accessible than it is.

When to apply

• One Madrid adviser advertises a January to June 2027 block, so applications run through the autumn.
• The Lisbon and Madrid roles at one international bank carried page update dates in May and July 2026 respectively and no application deadline at all, which is common in this region: the roles are live until they are filled.
• Where no deadline is stated, the honest answer is that we cannot tell you when it closes and neither can the employer's page. Apply early rather than planning around a date that does not exist.

Language requirements

• No employer we verified in this region states a Spanish or Portuguese language requirement. That includes a Madrid adviser whose careers page and job titles are entirely in Spanish.
• We are not telling you Spanish is unnecessary in practice. We are telling you no page we read asked for it, and we do not invent requirements employers have not stated. If you would be a strong candidate but assumed the language ruled you out, that assumption is not supported by what these employers publish.

What a local applicant knows

• A Madrid page can carry a live application form beside a deadline that expired the previous year. One posting we found renders perfectly and states an application deadline of October 2025. Read the dates on the page rather than trusting that a working page means an open role.
• One Spanish adviser's public list showed four vacancies with a link implying more behind it. Where a careers page has a see all link, use it, because the featured list is not the full list.

What this page cannot tell you

• Everything above was observed on official postings on 7 August 2026. Nothing is inferred from general knowledge about this market, so where an employer stated nothing, this page says nothing.
• The employer's own page is the source of truth. Roles are filled, withdrawn and re-dated without notice.
