How internships work here

The stage, and why it is six months

French degree programmes build in an année de césure, a gap year taken mid degree, and a stage de fin d'études at the end. One adviser we read states it accepts long internships only, naming césure and end of studies explicitly. That is why six months is not a negotiating position here: the placements are built around what the schools require, not around what the desk would prefer.

January starts

The clearest pattern in the region. Verified postings start in January 2027, January or March 2027, and December 2026. Two Paris seats on one international board both start in January. If you are planning a French placement, the decision point is the autumn before.

Off cycle by another name

Some international banks label their French placements seasonal or off cycle, which describes the same six month stage in the language of a global programme. Do not filter these out because the word summer is missing.

The internship as a full time route

One Paris posting states that candidates should be available for full time employment in July 2027 or 2028. The stage is treated as the entry point to the graduate pipeline rather than as a standalone experience, which raises what is expected of you during it.

Where the roles are

• Paris carries almost everything, but read the address rather than the label. One large bank we verified posts its corporate and investment banking placements in Montrouge, an inner suburb, rather than in Paris proper.
• The international banks and the independents both recruit here, and both use the same six month shape, which makes the French market unusually consistent to search compared with Germany.
• Technology focused advisers run Paris alongside Berlin and Munich on shared processes, so a Paris application can put you in front of a German desk and the reverse.

When to apply

• One Paris posting carries an application deadline of 1 December 2026 while also stating that the firm recruits on a rolling basis and encourages early application. Where both appear, the rolling statement is the operative one.
• Verified start dates cluster at 1 December 2026, January 2027, and January or March 2027.
• Applications for January starts run months ahead. By the time a January placement is advertised as opening, the preparation has already had to happen.

Language requirements

• French is required at the domestic and the mid market houses. One Paris posting states that fluency in French and English is essential; another adviser requires fluency in both; a large French bank posts its role in French.
• One international bank states no language requirement at all on its Paris seat. The same bank states none in Frankfurt either, while four comparable roles across both markets do state one. Do not assume French is universal.

What a local applicant knows

• If your degree does not include a césure or an end of studies placement, some French postings are not open to you regardless of how well you match the rest. The requirement is structural rather than a preference, and it is the most common reason a strong non French application does not progress.
• Check the address rather than the city label. A role advertised as Paris may be in Montrouge or another inner suburb, which matters for commuting and for the tax and housing questions that follow.
• One French job board we tried is entirely client rendered and returned nothing at all to an automated check. That is a limitation on our side rather than the employer's, and it means some French roles will always need checking by hand.
