Investment banking internships in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

German-speaking investment banking recruits mostly off cycle rather than through a single summer intake, and language requirements are stricter here than anywhere else in Europe. AnalystClass tracks 28 opportunities here, 16 of them open right now. Every record links to the employer's own posting and shows the date it was last checked.

Market observations made 7 August 2026. Each row carries its own check date.

How internships work here

Off cycle internship
The dominant format, and the thing that most surprises students applying from the UK. Goldman Sachs advertises Frankfurt for an April to June window and Paris for January to March, and Morgan Stanley offers around three months varying with business need. If you are waiting for a summer application to open, you are waiting for the wrong thing.
Pflichtpraktikum, the mandatory internship
German degree programmes often require an internship to graduate, and some postings are written for that student specifically. One Frankfurt advertiser we read specifies a four to six month mandatory internship. If your own course does not mandate a placement, read the wording carefully before applying, because the requirement is sometimes a filter rather than a description.
Longer than you expect
Three months is the short end here. Four to six months is common, and the advertised duration is usually a genuine requirement rather than an opening position in a negotiation.
Open application
Several German advisers accept speculative applications year round rather than posting dated vacancies. One firm caps its open application at the end of the calendar year, which is a deadline on a route that otherwise looks permanently available.

Where the roles are

  • Frankfurt carries the international banks. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley both post Frankfurt seats, alongside domestic advisory houses and the transaction advisory arms of the large accounting firms. If you want a bulge bracket name in German-speaking Europe, this is where the postings are.
  • Munich appears alongside Frankfurt rather than instead of it. Morgan Stanley advertises one off cycle internship as Frankfurt or Munich on a single posting, so a Munich preference is often expressed inside a Frankfurt application rather than as a separate one.
  • Vienna is a separate recruiting market with its own calendar, not an extension of Germany. The Austrian houses run narrow, clearly dated windows and publish them, which is unusual and worth exploiting.
  • Zurich postings we see are concentrated in transaction advisory rather than in bank M&A, so a Swiss search that only looks for investment banking titles will miss most of what is open.
  • Berlin and Hamburg carry the independents and the technology focused advisers rather than the balance sheet banks. The work is real M&A; the brand names are less familiar outside the region.

When to apply

  • One Vienna adviser publishes an exact window of 17 August to 18 September 2026 for a March 2027 start. That is a four week window for a placement seven months later, and missing it costs a year.
  • One Frankfurt open application carries a stated cap of 31 December 2026.
  • The off cycle windows we verified sit at quarter starts, and applications run months ahead of them. Goldman Sachs advertises Frankfurt for April to June 2027 and Paris for January to March 2027, so a spring start is a decision made the previous autumn.

Language requirements

  • German is required more often here than anywhere else in Europe, and often at a level above conversational. Postings we read specify a native German speaker, a minimum of C2, and native level German. These are not soft preferences.
  • Morgan Stanley states fluency in English and German for its Frankfurt or Munich seat, and EY in Zurich asks for both in speech and writing.
  • Goldman Sachs states no language requirement at all on either its Frankfurt or its Paris posting. Four comparable roles in the same market do state one, so this silence is a real difference rather than a gap in what we read. Do not assume you need German for every Frankfurt seat.
  • Austrian postings we read ask for excellent English as the requirement and treat German and a third language as desirable, which is a materially lower bar than the German market next door.

What a local applicant knows

  • Applying to Frankfurt without German is possible but narrows your list sharply, and the list it narrows to is the international banks. Applying to a Mittelstand focused adviser without German is not realistic, whatever the posting says about working language.
  • Pay is stated far more often here than in the UK. One Vienna posting advertises 2,200 euro gross per month for a six month internship. That is one observation rather than a market rate, but the practice of publishing it is itself regional.
  • Some German advertisers apply by email against a page with no per role permalink, which means the same URL silently becomes a different job. A link you saved a month ago may look live and describe something else entirely.

What this page cannot tell you

  • Everything above was observed on official postings on 7 August 2026. Nothing is inferred from general knowledge about this market, so where an employer stated nothing, this page says nothing.
  • The employer's own page is the source of truth. Roles are filled, withdrawn and re-dated without notice.
  • Coverage reflects firms whose recruiting is publicly documented, which under-represents smaller boutiques that hire through networks.
  • AnalystClass is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any firm listed here.
